On Sat., May 17 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Guitars in the Classroom (GITC) will offer a free professional development seminar for teachers at The Abbey, which is a Hornblower historic venue at 2825 5th Ave. in San Diego.

This special music integration workshop will show teachers the basics of playing simple guitar, singing with students, teaching songs and facilitating classroom songwriting while meeting state educational standards. Teachers are welcome to borrow an acoustic guitar, free of charge, courtesy of GITC sponsor, Daisy Rock Guitars. The industry’s premiere girl guitar company is well-known for their unique selection of lightweight, thin-necked instruments ideal for the smaller hands and lighter builds of females and children alike.

Guitars in the Classroom and Daisy Rock share a common goal of making music accessible and getting guitars into the hands of musicians everywhere.

Guitars in the Classroom’s online enrollment is happening now at www.guitarsintheclassroom.org. Ongoing classes are also planned for San Diego teachers next fall. As many San Diegans know, Hornblower tours often give special attention to environmental and community education. The venue donation is a part of their exemplary dedication to education, and the belief that all of San Diego’s students will benefit from making music at school. This professional development event will be presented in partnership San Diego's Mission4Music charity foundation (www.mission4music.org), a parent and community-led organization that raised funds at the Wee Rock Music Festival to help provide this training to teachers regardless of ability to pay.

GITC, a non-profit based in Solana Beach, trains and equips educators in 23 states to integrate music across the curriculum each day so all children get the chance to discover the joy and power of making music. The work has proven itself to be a powerful tool for all kinds of learners including those who face special challenges or are learning English as a second language. Teachers who consider themselves shower singers and total beginners are encouraged to sign up. Everyone has the ability to succeed in this program.

Love Without Borders Opening Reception May 17, 2008 at 7:00PM
International love goes local as Limbo Fine Art Gallery hosts The Love Movement and other prominent street and surf artists in a show to benefit the International Humanity Foundation San Diego, CA – How can art on the edge help kids on the fringes? By erasing the borders between them. Los Angeles-based artists’ collective The Love Movement (or TLM) has a history of creating art with just that purpose, using funds from art sales to purchase school supplies and build a community well in a village in Benin, Africa. When long-time International Humanity Foundation (or IHF) volunteer Amy Thom first met TLM artists in 2006, she immediately recognized an opportunity to work together, using the energy of the art community to raise money for IHF’s children abroad. Early last year, TLM dedicated a portion of art sales from an LA show to the sponsorship of three schoolchildren in Bali, Indonesia, supporting their individual educations for an entire year. In September 2007, Amy visited those children while she was volunteering with IHF overseas, bringing them notebooks, clothes and the knowledge that artists across an ocean believe in their potential for future success through art and education. In May 2008, IHF and TLM will be working together again to spread the love and raise money for the education and empowerment of kids abroad. Given that IHF’s home offices are in San Diego, Amy wanted to open the city’s doors to TLM and other collaborating artists, bringing the best of graphic talent from California and NYC to Limbo Fine Art Gallery in Hillcrest. The World at Large / / Love Without Borders will present an amazing lineup of internationally-shown artists: Michael De Feo, Wolfgang Bloch, Alex Knost, Tyler Warren, Ben Brough – 33, Andrew Sarnecki - Hippytree, Hovin Wang, Paul Lefevre – Polish, Micke Tong, Thundercut, Abe Lincoln Jr., Lichiban, eight-year-old Reece V., Meredith Ambruso, Guy Quezada, Jon Ho, Karen Jones and of course, TLM. The opening reception of The World at Large / / Love Without Borders is Saturday, May 17, 2008, from 7pm to 12am at Limbo Fine Art Gallery, 1432 University Avenue, San Diego. Cover charge is $10 at the door with a hosted bar provided by Hangar One Vodka and Stone Brewing, live dj, and giveaways all night. All proceeds to benefit IHF. The show runs from May 10 to June 1 and is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays. Please contact Limbo at 619.316.2239 to arrange a press preview or a private showing. For more information, please visit: www.ihfonline.org www.limboarts.com www.tlmphilly.com The International Humanity Foundation is a San Diego-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides free education and community leadership development, as well as operates orphanages and famine feeds, for the poorest of the world’s poor in Indonesia, Thailand and Kenya. IHF’s offices are 100% volunteer-run and all monies raised go directly to fund its overseas programs. San Diego Human Dignity Foundation Gala May 17, 2008 at 6:00PM
The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation (SDHDF) presents their 12th Annual Gala and will transform a downtown San Diego hotel into a creative canvas from start to finish. This year’s gala theme celebrates The Art of Generosity. From the design and décor to the music and entertainment, to the very guests themselves…everything and everyone will be a work of art.

“We want to celebrate and recognize the creative spirit of philanthropy by presenting an evening that invites our guest to be “part of the art,” explained SDHDF Board President David Miles. “From the moment they arrive, guests will be transported and engaged in the artist’s experience, visiting an “artist loft”, an “art gallery” and a “major exhibition.”  Even the way we share information about our grantees will be presented in a unique and artistic way through expressive photography.”

The SDHDF has helped distributed nearly $800,000 dollars to local nonprofit organizations over the past eight years. This is the night to come together to celebrate this wide spectrum of generosity. Quite simply, organizers encourage San Diegans to “Engage in Art. Engage in Generosity.”

The gala committee is especially excited about the hot Latin Jazz combo that will perform and entertain. The “Sounds of Generosity” is a collection of world class, award-winning musicians who will have been collected for this very unique evening. This group of Grammy and Emmy award-winning performers comes direct from national and international tours.

Together, these musicians have a tight, but exploratory sense of sound and their spirit and synergy will energize the evening.

San Diego music lovers will be familiar with many of these names and sounds. The 6-piece combo includes:

Coral MacFarland Thuet - A voice that covers the language of sounds found in the Americas. Coral sings fluently in Spanish, English and Portuguese combining jazz and the music of Latin America.

Allen Phillips - Composer, keyboardist, multi-Instrumental virtuoso

Holly Hofmann - One of the premiere jazz flutists in the country and a hot force in improvisation and sound.

Rob Thorsen – Bassist, classic jazz at it's purest.

Tommy Arnos – Local favorite and "Fattburger" Percussionist, irresistible & adventurous

Ramon Banda- Drummer and one half of the multi-talented Banda Brothers who toured extensively with Poncho Sanchez

During the pre-dinner reception, guests will enjoy the “must see to believe” sounds of Tom Griesgraber “The Stick” - one of the world’s most respected and active performers on The Chapman Stick, a unique 12-string instrument.
The entire evening will be evoke a grand, art-filled New York night as guests travel from studio to gallery to museum, enjoy unique cocktails, full gourmet dinner and live entertainment and a unique photo exhibit of our grantees…all while learning more about the SDHDF and the non-profit organizations it supports. The evening is designed to entertain in creative and unusual ways and will be filled unique opportunities to be “part of the art.”

A dramatic, semi-fictional production, Happy Songs uses multi-media, monologue, comedy and a score of original songs to illuminate what the artist believes to be truth of the U.S. involvement in Iraq. Mardi Gras Cheers for Charity! May 31, 2008 at 7:00PM
San Diegans have an opportunity to positively influence education on the other side of the world with the purchase of a $75 ticket to the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club’s annual fund-raising event, Cheers for Charity.

Some of the proceeds from the Mardi Gras-themed party on May 31 will benefit Rotary Hall, a dormitory for female students at the Nangarhar Univeristy in Afghanistan. Already under construction, the $250,000 dormitory will house up to 72 female students who will be able to continue their education at the university level. Many of the students will become teachers and go on to educate another generation of girls in Afghanistan.

“Once Afghan girls are in sixth grade or so, they must be taught by female teachers,” explained Steve Brown, a member of the LJGT Rotary club. “The construction of this dormitory will allow more girls to continue their education and eventually become teachers. It is our hope that fewer Afghan girls will have to drop out of school due to a lack of female teachers.”

The festive Cheers for Charity 2008 will be held from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on  Sat., May 31, at the La Jolla Marriott (4240 La Jolla Village Drive, La Jolla). The 19th annual gala will include wine tasting, micro beer sampling, live and silent auctions, food and entertainment.

The public is invited to attend. Tickets are $75.

Tickets are $40 and include a continental breakfast, gourmet lunch, a gift bag valued at more than $200, free health screenings, keynote presentations by Doctor Pam Peeke, one of the country’s leading women physicians, and Encinitas resident Colette Carlson, a nationally-recognized motivational speaker on sales, negotiation, communication and balance, ask-the-doctor and pharmacist booths and informative breakout sessions given by health and beauty experts.

For more information on how you can attend this conference, call (800) 82-SHARP or visit www.sharp.com/womensevent.
