Celebrating Excellence in Our Community![]() Black History Month Local Heroes are selected for demonstrating a high level of commitment and community participation. The awards recognize their collective contributions of courage and humanity, encouraging others throughout our local region to continue this legacy. This is the 10th year for the program in San Diego County, which is part of a statewide initiative sponsored by Union Bank of California. Each year, distinct individuals are recognized for their outstanding efforts to promote and support the arts, business, community activism, public service and education throughout San Diego County. Honoring their endeavors as they positively affect the African-American community, among others, the annual event is a celebration of spirit and vision. This year’s honorees follow. Steven C. Collins is being awarded for his commitment to public service. Collins has been director of government and community relations in the marketing and communications department of San Diego State University since 2001, serving as SDSU’s liaison to area government and community leaders and organizations. Learn more about this local hero» Kadir Nelson is a nationally recognized artist, writer and illustrator. Nelson’s latest book, We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball, was published in January. He is receiving this award for his devotion to the arts. Learn more about this local hero» The award for education goes to Sharletta Richardson. Her students have credited her for nurturing their interest in music. Richardson cherishes her students and lives out her dream of being a performer through them. Learn more about this local hero» Dee Sanford is an award-winning, nationally and internationally acclaimed motivational speaker, business trainer, coach and television host. Sanford is being honored in the business category. Learn more about this local hero» Debra A. Stephens has been actively involved in the San Diego community for more than 25 years. She currently serves as vice-chair of The Catfish Club and sits on the boards of The Urban League. Stephens is a local hero for her community activism. Learn more about this local hero» Cleo Malone, Ph.D. is the founder of The Palavra Tree, Inc., an organization which develops programs to promote healthy behaviors, decisions and environments that reduce, postpone or eliminate the problematic use of alcohol, drugs and tobacco.
