You won't want to miss the revolution that is taking over the airwaves in Memphis! We’re talkin’ downtown, down-home Memphis of the ’50s. Rock ’n’ roll is taking over the airways and a downright demented deejay named Huey is spinning the music of black and white America together for the first time. From the author of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and Over the River and Through the Woods, and the keyboardist of Bon Jovi, comes a rafter-rattling musical that immortalizes the man who gave rock its original roll. Book and Lyrics by Joe DiPietro – Music and Additional Lyrics by David Bryan – Based on a Concept by George W. George – Directed by Christopher Ashley

Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008 6 – 9 p.m., Ages 21+ Reservations: 858-534-4109 Public: $20 – Walk-in admission: $25
Shawn Mullins, the singer-songwriter best known for his Top 10 hit "Lullaby," will bring his southern style of humanity, heartache and hope to Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, for this month’s Green Flash Seaside Concert. On Wednesday, Aug. 20, Mullins will perform his extensive repertoire on the aquarium’s outdoor tide-pool plaza. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Mullins garnered national attention in 1998 after releasing the album Soul’s Core, which featured the Grammy-nominated “Lullaby.” The song eventually hit #1 on the Adult Top 40, #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #9 on the Modern Rock Tracks. In March, Mullins released his newest album, honeydew. Green Flash Concerts, co-hosted by 102.1 KPRI and supported by San Diego County Volkswagen Dealers, are for music lovers ages 21 and older only. Attendees can experience the aquarium after hours and enjoy food and drinks for purchase, provided by Rock Bottom Brewery and Restaurant. Keep an eye out for a real “green flash,” a rare phenomenon caused by the refraction of light as the sun sets. Green Flash concerts support the mission of Birch Aquarium at Scripps and its newest exhibit, Feeling the Heat: The Climate Challenge.

"Black Wave: A Family's Adventure at Sea and the Disaster that Saved them" by John and Jean Silverwood. The authors are residents of San Diego and this is their true story. With their four children aboard the fifty-five foot catamaran Emerals Jane, the family began their journey, down the Atlantic coast, into the Caribbean, and through the Panama Canal to the Pacific ocean. Two years into their sailing expericne, the fmily faced their greatest nightmare off a remote atoll in the French Polynesia as the current swept the catamaran onto a reef and smashed it to pieces. A true story filled with family drama. A great read.

| JOHN PIZZARELLI TO HEADLINE SYMPHONY AT SALK ON AUG. 23 |
Aug 23, 2008 at 5:15PM |
Theodore Gildred Court |
Music, Charity, Community |
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies (www.salk.edu) will present the 13th annual Symphony at Salk on Sat., Aug. 23.
Singer and jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli will join the San Diego Symphony with returning guest conductor Thomas Wilkins for the outdoor concert overlooking the Pacific Ocean in picturesque La Jolla. This will be Wilkins’ fourth consecutive year to lead the San Diego Symphony, which will share the stage with Pizzarelli.
Internationally known for classic standards and the charm he brings to his performances, Pizzarelli has established himself as the consummate entertainer. He has cultivated a winning international career by singing classic standards and late-night ballads, and by playing sublime and inventive guitar. Using greats such as Nat “King” Cole and Frank Sinatra as touchstones, Pizzarelli is among the prime revivalists of the great American songbook, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing.
Honorary chair of Symphony at Salk is internationally renowned artist Francoise Gilot-Salk, widow of Jonas Salk. Gilot-Salk’s artwork, The Oracle (1962), provides this year’s visual theme. Chosen from her Labyrinth series, the piece is a free-form interpretation of Gilot-Salk’s imagination and recollections of the myth surrounding Theseus and his epic seafaring adventure to slay the Minotaur. The Oracle presents a lighthouse symbol, set against colors of the Aegean Sea to guide Theseus as he sails for Crete.
Symphony at Salk is held on the Theodore Gildred Court, which offers sunset views framed on two sides by the working laboratories of Nobel Prize-winning scientists. Designed by architect Louis I. Kahn, the Salk Institute is one of the world’s most honored structures and is a designated historical site.
Event festivities include Institute tours at 5:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.; reception and supper at 6 p.m.; and musical program at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit basic biological research and also support community programs, such as the Salk Mobile Science Lab and the High School Science Day.
Individual tickets for Symphony at Salk will be available in July for $250 each. Sponsorship packages range from $2,500 to $50,000. For additional ticket or sponsorship information, call (858) 453-4100, ext. 1882, or e-mail hodges@salk.edu.
