There will be meeting on August 3rd & 4th in Carlsbad to begin their round three marine protected area proposal negotiations. This is the final round; maps that come out of the August and September work sessions will ultimately get forwarded to the Fish & Game Commission for adoption into law, with a recommended preferred alternative from the Blue Ribbon Task Force.
The meeting is the last chance for people to comment on The Marine Life Protection Act or MLPA proposals without leaving the county. The MLPA requires the state to examine and redesign California's system of marine protected areas. The process requires the development of proposals to set aside areas off the state's coastline from the Mexican Border to Northern California. There are at least four areas recommended for protection off San Diego's coastline. The proposals have been developed during "rounds" of development and feedback.
