Join us for another fun event! We are going to attend a free outdoor organ concert at the beautiful venue of the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. After the concert, we’ll continue the afternoon with conversations in French and English at the nearby tea house.
We will meet at 1:30 in front of the small fountain by the steps leading to the concert place; at 1:45 we’ll sit together (look for the French flag on the back of your organizer’s seat if you arrive late!); the concert lasts one hour without intermission, from 2 pm to 3 pm. If it rains, we’ll be sitting under one of the two colonnades (archways).
John D. and Adolph Spreckels donated the Spreckels Organ, one of the world's largest outdoor pipe organs, to the City of San Diego in 1914 for the Panama-California Exposition. This unique organ contains 4,530 pipes ranging in length from the size of a pencil to 32 feet and is housed in an ornate vaulted structure with highly embellished gables. Since 1917, San Diego has had a civic organist, who performs free weekly Sunday concerts. In October 2001 Dr. Carol Williams was the first woman in the world to be appointed as Civic Organist. She has been the San Diego Civic Organist and Artistic Director of the Spreckels Organ Society in San Diego, California since 2001. Carol gives a new spin to classical organ concerts with her charismatic humor. International audiences have received Carols’ live performances with a “rock star” enthusiasm. In addition, she has recorded several CDs, including one dedicated entirely to the works of French composers.
