Dr. Plotkin is co-founder of the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) which has mapped over 40 million acres of rainforest in partnership with indigenous communities to increase protection for threatened rainforest lands. Dr. Plotkin’s lecture will highlight “Rainforest Shamans and Google Earth: Saving the Amazon in Six Dimensions” and will address the work the Amazon Conservation Team has undertaken to protect the Amazon and its native tribes since the filming of AMAZON.

Joining Dr. Plotkin is Chief Almir, an environmentalist, political activist and tribal chief who has been fighting to save both his Surui tribe and the Amazon rainforest for more than 15 years. His efforts are credited with almost single-handedly bringing his tribe back from the brink of extinction. His opposition to logging, mining, agricultural and other development interests in favor of more sustainable ventures in western Brazil has made him the target of death threats and violence. Chief Almir will also speak with the assistance of a Portuguese translator and participate in the Question & Answer portion of the lecture.

Following the talk, Dr. Plotkin will sign copies of his book "Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice: An Ethnobotanist Searches for New Medicines in the Amazon Rain Forest." Copies of the book can be purchased in the North Star Science Store (located in the Science Center) prior to the talk.
