In an effort to raise awareness about refugees around the world and our community, Aztec International Rescue Committee and the ISCOR Students’ Society will host Refugee Awareness Week from Nov. 2-5, 2010 at SDSU.
On Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in Casa Real, Judy Bernstein, author of "They Poured Fire On Us From the Sky", will speak with her co-author Benson Deng, about fleeing Sudan and being resettled in San Diego.
On Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010 a screening of Climate Refugees will be held at 7 p.m. in Montezuma Hall, followed by a panel discussion with SDSU professors.
On Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010 in partnership with SDSU’ s Enviro-Business organization (e3), local refugee-owned businesses will sell food and crafts at the Farmers’ Market, while student and community organizations will host an informational fair on their role in refugee issues from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Campanile Walkway.
The awareness campaign will end on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 with “A Day in the Life of a Refugee,” featuring guided tours of a mock refugee camp from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the ENS 700 Field in front of the Music Building.
Although not mandatory, participants can register for the tour at wwww.refugeeawarenessweek.com. Following the tour, we will celebrate the week with a cultural celebration from 5-7pm in Montezuma Hall featuring music, dances, and free food.
