In October, the Japanese Friendship Garden will host the 6th International Symposium of Japanese Gardens themed “The Spirit of Japanese Gardens and Culture.” The symposium is held every two years and is inspired by a growing interest in Japanese gardens around the world.

This three-day event will discover the spirit of Japanese gardens and study how they are interrelated with other arts through lectures, panel discussions, and workshops. The symposium offers participants an unparalleled opportunity to learn from world-renowned experts about issues vital to Japanese gardens outside of Japan including design, construction and maintenance.

Featured speakers include Dr. Makoto Nakamura, designer of the Dawes Arboretum in Ohio and the gardens of the Himeji Castle in Japan, and Mr. Shoji Yamada a certified tree doctor with vast experience regarding the diagnosis and treatment of trees.

Featured demonstrators include Mr. Tokushirou Tamane, Master Gardener of the Kinkakuji Temple in Japan, and Mr. Takanobu Mizumoto, former gardener of Ritsurin Cultural Heritage Garden, a Designated Special Place of Scenic Beauty.

The symposium begins Saturday, October 2 and ends Monday, October 4, 2010. For further information or to register please visit www.niwa.org and click on “Symposium” or call our office at 619-232-2721 x100.

After the symposium, participants are invited on two tours. The first tour on October 5 will explore the best of San Diego with stops in Old Town, the Gaslamp Quarter, Coronado and the San Diego waterfront. The tour includes a cruise on San Diego’s bay as well as a guided tour of the San Diego Zoo with one of their horticulturalists.
