'Kid City' Reopening At The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center

“Kid City” – the special exhibit just for kids age 5 and under– at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is reopening Saturday, Oct. 23 after two weeks of renovations that will completely transform the exhibition into an even more kid-friendly space!

Parents take note, “Kid City” is not only fun for your kids, you’ll have a blast too! Explore alongside the little ones as you interact with the exciting hands-on exhibits together. Kids go crazy for all of the fun experience designed especially for them. It starts at the “Ball Wall” with its multiple, chutes, tracks and moving objects. Nearby kids can direct an air blower in different directions and make a set of colorful pinwheels rotate round-and-round.

The new “Little Learner’s Lab” features an innovative microscope-on-a-rope for up-close exploration of objects of many different shapes, sizes and textures. For babies still in the crawling stage, the new “Infant Area” offers a safe space for them to move and explore soft, sloped and bumpy objects – all contributing to their developing motor and social skills. A new “Fire Truck” is fun for kids as they turn different knobs to create movements and sounds similar to those found on a real fire truck.

Throughout “Kid City,” you will find tips for interacting with your child at each of the hands-on exhibit areas. Want even more of what “Kid City” has to offer? The Fleet’s “Young Scientist” program for preschool age children, 3 to 5 years old, meets once-a-week over the course of 4 weeks. You and your child will meet with a small group of other parents and kids and a Fleet Educator to explore age -appropriate scientific topics. It’s a great opportunity to encourage the curiosity of your little learner and have a lot of fun in the process.

The renovations to the exhibition have been made possible by generous gifts and grants from the Donald C. and Elizabeth M. Dickinson Foundation, the Nierman Family Fund at the San Diego Jewish Community Foundation, an Anonymous Donor, the Mandell Weiss Charitable Trust, and sponsorships from ScholarShare College Savings Plan and Fidelity Investments.
