Reading and book signing with Paul Vanderwood on September 30 at 11 a.m. during the 5th annual San Diego City College International Book Fair.

In his latest book, "Satan’s Playground: Mobster and Movie Stars at America’s Greatest Gaming Resort", distinguished historian Paul Vanderwood tells the extraordinary story of clever and unscrupulous bordello, casino, racetrack and cabaret owners in bawdy Mexican border towns like Tijuana.

Dubbed the “Border Barons,” they reestablished themselves south of the border under the pressure of 1920s Prohibition. There American high and low society relished their offerings, and the Barons became celebrated multimillionaires. Vanderwood is also the author of "Juan Soldado: Rapist, Murder, Martyr, Saint"; and "The Power of God Against the Guns of Government: Religious Turmoil in Late Nineteenth Century Mexico".

About Paul Vanderwood:
Born in Brooklyn and raised across the Hudson River in northern New Jersey, Vanderwood was a newspaper reporter before joining academia. After graduating from Bethany College, West Virginia in 1950, he went into the army for three years and then Scripps Howard Newspapers hired him to report on civil rights activities around Memphis. He covered both the early ministries of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the first successes of Elvis Presley.

At the same time, he earned his MA in history at Memphis State University. Service as a Peace Corps evaluator in South America in 1963 piqued his interest in the region, and the following year he left journalism to earn a PhD in Mexican history at the University of Texas, Austin.

Desirous of living, teaching, and researching along the border, he joined the faculty of San Diego State University in 1969 and retired twenty-five years later. During that period, he researched and wrote books and articles and traveled and lived for periods in Europe, East Africa, Australia and Mexico. Now, when his insatiable curiosity does not have him on the road, the noted raconteur writes at home in San Diego.

This book signing will be held in D121A/B San Diego City College faculty lounge on the SDCC campus. Google Map
