Did you know that ukiyo-e has impacted contemporary comics? To be more specific, the ancient Japanese art form informs the artworks of Taiwanese-American artist James Jean, best known for his Eisner-award-winning cover art for Vertigo/ DC comics’ popular Fables series. Jean’s paintings and drawings are influenced by the ukiyo-e tradition with its suggestions of narrative possibilities.

Filmmaker, artist, and MCASD film curator Neil Kendricks takes us on a journey through the eclectic works of this contemporary artist whose wildly inventive art is equally at home in comics as it continues to find a new audience on the walls of art galleries.

Kendricks’ lecture presents a visual travelogue through the richly evocative and surreal dreamscapes of Jean’s paintings and sketchbooks to examine how this artist - with one foot in comics and another in the art world - is developing his own distinct visual language of provocative, personal imagery.

Location: San Diego Museum of Art at 1450 El Prado San Diego, CA 92101. Google Map.
