THIS EVENT IS IN THE PAST!

Thomas Gainsborough & The Modern Woman

In a spectacular array of paintings by Sir Thomas Gainsborough (1727–1788), this exhibition explores the ways women, art, and fashion came together to contribute to a new sense of women’s roles in society in the mid to late 18th century under the brush of Gainsborough’s artistic genius.

Gainsborough was noted in his day as an unparalleled master of brushwork; nobles, statesmen, musicians, and the range of men and women of the period’s merchant class all sat for him, but it is his portraits of notorious society women which attracted the most attention.

Organized by the Cincinnati Art Museum in association with The San Diego Museum of Art, this exhibition brings together loans from museums in the United States and England and is shown along a number of 18th century dresses. The event takes plac on January 29th, 2011 at 10a.m. until 5p.m.

Location: The San Diego Museum of Art, 1450 El Prado, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. Google Map
