Widely regarded as a masterpiece of Spanish cinema, this film, set in a remote village in the 1940s, is an allegory of Spanish life after General Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The film focuses on the young girl Ana and her fascination with the 1931 American horror film "Frankenstein," as well as exploring her family life and schooling. It has been called a "bewitching portrait of a child's haunted inner life" and is considered as one of finest portrayals of the personal legacies of war.
The San Diego Public Library will screen the film "Spirit of the Beehive" (El Espíritu de la Colmena) in conjunction with the ongoing One Book, One San Diego community reading campaign. The film will screen at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2011 and is free to the public.
