The film will screen at 6:30p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 in the Central Library. The monthly Schlockfest screening film is the library’s homage to the classic B movies from Hollywood’s Golden Age. This event is free and open to the public.
About the film: "Gamera: The Giant Monster" is a 1965 daikaiju eiga (Japanese giant monster film) about a giant turtle, awakened from the accidental detonation of an atomic bomb as a result of an aerial assault by American fighters on Soviet bombers caught crossing into North American airspace. The fire-breathing, flying turtle monster wastes no time in causing a rampage of destruction and wreaking total havoc on its way to reach Japan. As with most films made during the Japanese monster film boom of the mid-to-late 1960s, Gamera explores the by-products of war as the flotsam of bellicose humanity returns to haunt us.
The One Book campaign, sponsored with KPBS, is designed to encourage all San Diegans to read the same book at the same time, and to educate and enlighten on topics and themes of concern to the community.
