The 10K/5K/ (3.1 mile/6.2 mile) run/walk takes place on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011 at Petco Park (13th & Imperial) and makes its way through San Diego’s historic Gaslamp District and East Village.
The 10K starts at 7.10 a.m., and the 5K walk starts at 8.15 a.m. The early start times ensure that runners finish with plenty of time to return home and prepare Thanksgiving dinner.
This year, the run is being renamed the United Run for the Hungry and race organizers are encouraging runners to form teams to run for a nominated charity.
Proceeds from team registrations will be divided between the Food Bank, Jewish Family Services (JFS) and a team’s nominated charity.
Race sponsor, Michael London of Pure Fitness said, “Teams of five or more can sign up and nominate a charity to receive a third of their team’s race proceeds. The remaining two thirds will be divided between JFS and the Food Bank.”
Race organizers are also inviting run teams to wear their zaniest Thanksgiving-themed costumes. Officials expect a large number of teams to dress in turkey, pilgrim, and pumpkin outfits which will add to the Thanksgiving holiday spirit.
Jill Borg Spitzer, CEO of Jewish Family Service, added, “More than 480,000 people in San Diego County face hunger every day. Many are elderly, homebound and isolated. Our Foodmobile program delivers hot, nutritious meals to people in need who can’t access other nutritional services and depend on our daily meal delivery. Together, with the Food Bank, the United Run for the Hungry helps bring the issue of hunger to the forefront.”
Spitzer added, “The 5K & 10K is a great way to start Thanksgiving Day, and it finishes with plenty of time for runners to return home and prepare Thanksgiving dinner.”
Approximately 4,500 participants are expected to run and walk in this event.
Participants can register on the day of the event. Registration for the 10K closes at 7:00 a.m. and registration for the 5K closes at 7:45 a.m.
