The internationally acclaimed Hungarian piano virtuoso Péter Tóth will make his San Diego debut in the intimate setting of the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library Center. His program will include works by Haydn, Schubert, Chopin, Scriabin, Debussy and Liszt. Mr. Tóth’s meteoric rise to prominence began as a teenager, when after only four years of piano study, he won international piano competitions in Wittenberg (1997) and Bovino (1998). In 1998 he also received the Liszt Academy’s esteemed “Sari Biro Memorial Award” as the best young pianist of the year.
His international career escalated when he won the prestigious Franz Liszt International Piano Competitions in Weimar (2000) and in Budapest (2001). Tóth has performed throughout Europe and Asia, including in such noted halls as the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In 2005 he made a resoundingly successful debut in Munich with a solo recital in the series, “Piano Concerts in the Royal Residence” of which the Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote, “It is enormous what this young Hungarian pianist is capable of….” Of his 2006 CD, “Late Piano Works of Liszt,” which won the coveted Prix du Disque Award, Audiophile Audition enthused, “In the Funeraille (1849), which celebrates the passing of Hungarian patriots and the spirit of Chopin, Tóth’s grasp of this moody lament is thorough and majestic, in the best tradition of Horowitz and Bolet.”
The concert is co-sponsored by the House of Hungary, San Diego, and the Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library. A complimentary reception featuring Hungarian pastries will offer an opportunity to mingle with fellow music lovers.
