Balboa Park will celebrate the Centennial of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in 2015. In honor of the historic centennial, the Plaza de Panama Committee has proposed a plan to restore the grand public spaces in the core of the park to pedestrians.

Over the years, Balboa Park has literally been taken over by cars, creating a dangerous situation for pedestrians and a compromised visitor experience. The Plaza de Panama Project will change this – by relieving the park of all automobile traffic in the historic core, the project will reclaim the Plaza de Panama, Plaza de California, West El Prado and Esplanade. All told, the project will reclaim 6.3 acres of new parks and plazas where there are currently roads and parking lots.

To provide an opportunity for the public to learn about the project firsthand, the Plaza de Panama Committee is offering monthly walking tours led by members of the Plaza de Panama design team. The tours will provide the public with detailed information on the project’s proposed plans and design renderings. The public will also be able to witness pedestrian-auto conflicts that the project largely resolves.

The tours will take place from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, starting at the Plaza de California (in front of the Museum of Man) and ending at the Organ Pavilion parking lot. The Plaza de Panama Committee recommends wearing comfortable, flat shoes to tour the park.

Following the first tour on September 17, 2011 - the remaining walks will be held on the third Saturday of each month. Google Map.
