Summer Salon Series 2012: Beyond The Banner: 'Capitalism Works For Me'

Artist Steve Lambert will install his interactive sculpture "Capitalism Works for Me" on the west side of the Museum for much of the month of August.

The sculpture exclaims, “Capitalism Works for Me” and prompts a vote of “In my life this is: True or False.” The sculpture displays the vote results in LED lights on either side of the phrase.

Lambert will give a talk on his work, of which he describes, “Start a conversation about capitalism and friends edge away slowly, and strangers even faster. This is what art is for. This is what art does well. It creates a space where new ideas and perspectives can be explored.” Daniela Kelly, Museum Educator, will lead a money printing workshop.

Sip a cocktail in the Rotunda, and view a performance of The Third Party in the Museum Galleries. The evening will convene with a musical set by San Francisco-based duo Peaking Lights. The duos experimental tracks utilize instruments fashioned from outdated analog technology, such as old alarm clocks, televisions, and synthesizers to create cohesive mix tapes that blend various dub, analog, collage, and pop compositions.
