Hindus believe that the god Vishnu has descended to earth on several occasions to save humankind from forces of chaos. Each time he has assumed a new form called an avatar, a body used to fight demons and mingle with people.
Drawing from the 175 works of art shown in the recent exhibition, "Vishnu: Hinduism's Blue-Skinned Savior," Joan Cummins, Curator of Asian Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, will introduce the diverse and ancient living traditions of celebrating avatars in sculpture, painting, textiles, and ritual objects.
Free CAIS members/$10 for Museum members/$20 non-members/$8 students
