San Diego Asian Film Foundation Quarterly Screening: 'This Is Not A Film'

Under house arrest for "propaganda against the system" and banned from filmmaking for 20 years, the great Iranian director Jafar Panahi pulls out an iPhone and makes "This is Not a Film."

A bold first-person essay about his life under house arrest, his film making practice, and indeed, the question of what is a film itself, Panahi's stark depiction of confinement explodes the possibilities of the medium and in the process, opens up our minds to the boundlessness of artistic freedom.

Far from being merely an insular look into a great artist's mind, "This is Not a Film" connects house arrest to the outside world (the Persian new year unfolds beyond his gates) and then to the world overseas -- to us as spectators of this intimate, modernist act of defiance.

Smuggled out of Iran in a USB drive in a cake and to the Cannes Film Festival, "This is Not a Film." arrives in San Diego on May 4, 2012. We should be so lucky.

Hosted by the San Diego Asian Film Foundation.
