The Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) will host its annual Celebration of Hope Gala & Auction on Friday, November 16th, at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in downtown San Diego. The theme of the 12th annual gala, one of the national nonprofit’s largest fundraising events, is “It’s About Time.”
Chris Harrison, the host of the hit television shows “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” will emcee and help honor local heroes doing their part to end one of life’s cruelest illnesses. Catherine Garcia, anchor of NBC 7 San Diego’s weeknight news programming, will be a special contributor.
Huntington’s disease (HD), a fatal genetic brain disorder that results in the loss of all mental and physical capabilities, affects thousands of Americans each year but many of their heroic stories go unheard. The HDSA-San Diego chapter’s Celebration of Hope Gala honors those living with HD as well as those who are making a difference in the ongoing fight to end HD.
With its mix of athletes, celebrities, civic leaders and entertainment personalities, the HDSA’s annual Celebration of Hope Gala is recognized as one San Diego’s most entertaining winter events. It recently received the “Outstanding Fundraising Event Award” at HDSA’s 2012 National Convention.
This year’s gala will feature entertainment by Atomic Groove, a musical favorite at the Belly Up, and one of Southern California’s biggest silent and live auctions. Items available for purchase include rare sports memorabilia, vacation packages, one-of-a-kind experiences and much more.
In addition to auction and entertainment, HDSA-San Diego will recognize 2012 Guthrie Award honoree, Mike Neil, for his outstanding service to the HD community. The Guthrie Award pays tribute to legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie, who battled with HD, and his wife Marjorie, who led the way in building a national HD community and driving a search for a cure.
HDSA-San Diego will also honor Don Cleveland, Dr. Frank Bennett, Holly Kordasiewicz and their research teams at UCSD and Isis Pharmaceuticals for their progress in therapy development for Huntington’s disease. The honorees have made discoveries into the causes and treatment of human neurodegenerative diseases, especially ALS and Huntington’s diseases. Their efforts are pioneering the development of stem cell and gene silencing therapies for both of these disorders.
The gala will take place at the Manchester Grand Hyatt located at One Market Place in downtown San Diego. (Google Maps) Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased on HDSA-San Diego’s website at www.hdsasandiego.org. Tickets are $300 per person with proceeds benefiting HDSA to help fund research for a cure, education and awareness, and support for families living with HD. Event sponsorships and other donation opportunities are also available.
Sponsors include the AWM Global Advisors, Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, UnionBank, AmericanWest Bank and U-T San Diego. For more information about HD, the Celebration of Hope Gala and how you can help, visit www.HDSASanDiego.org or call 619-225-2255.
