Urban Frontiers and Cross-Border Relations: ChangeExchange-The Past, Present and Future of San Diego's Historic Border Park
James Brown and John Fanestil, explore a future bi-national city on the southwestern border with Mexico at Monument Mesa State Park. Friendship Park is a bi-national meeting place located at the western-most end of the U.S.-Mexico border, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. For generations people from both nations have met at this location to visit with family and friends "across the line" or "through the fence." In 2009, the U.S. Border Patrol eliminated public access to this historic meeting place. John Fanestil is a leader in the Friends of Friendship Park, a community coalition now on the cusp of restoring public access to the park.
James Brown was a Loeb Fellow at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University in 2008-2009. He graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1994 with a B. Arch. He is currently a principal at Public Architecture in Logan Heights, San Diego in the Bread & Salt Building.
John Fanestil is Executive Director of the Foundation for Change, a social justice foundation supporting emerging leaders and organizations in San Diego and Tijuana.
