Kendall H. Brown, Professor of Asian Art History at the Art Department of California State University at Long Beach, will draw on the recent exhibition he curated at the Japan Society of New York, Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Culture, 1920-1945 for this lecture on Japanese Deco art.
In addition to covering art made for the venue of the street, home, and exhibition hall, this exhibition investigates themes in Japanese Deco including cosmopolitanism, nationalism, the "new floating world" of the cafe and dance hall, and the so-called "cultured home" where middle-class women curated their own artistic environments.
Sponsored by the Asian Arts Council Free AAC members/$10 for Museum members/$12 non-AAC members/$8 students
