"Empire Of Death" author book talks in San Diego for October/Halloween season.

"The Empire of Death: A Cultural History of Ossuaries and Charnel Houses"by Dr. Paul Koudounaris is a unique study. The first book to ever cover religious sanctuaries decorated with human bone, it combines stunning photography with meticulously researched text, to recover a forgotten history in the visual culture of religion and the history of macabre art.

Named one of the best books of 2011 by London's Evening Standard, it opened the doors to many sites that had never before been photographed, and generated press from around the world.

The author will be in San Diego to give two book talks at local libraries in the week before Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos. His talks are accompanied by a slide show, presenting the sites he studied in their full glory with his own remarkable photos.

He will present not just a brief history of the sites included in his book, but pepper it with bizarre and curious anecdotes about them and his experiences within them--including stories of hauntings, superstitions, and folklore involving the dead.
