The opening meeting of this, San Diego Independent Scholars' 30th year, will feature a panel discussion examining the present decline of civil discourse, followed by a celebratory social hour honoring the organization's anniversary.
Three panelists will address the topic from differing points of view:
-Dean Nelson, founder and director of both the Journalism Program and the Writers' Symposium at Point Loma Nazarene University, will discuss discourse in the media.
-Meenakshi Chakraverti, director of Public Conversations West, a branch of the nonprofit Public Conversations Project which fosters dialogues about polarizing issues, will describe methods for increasing understanding and deepening trust.
-Alan Houston, presently Provost of UCSD's Eleanor Roosevelt College, is a political theorist who focuses on Anglo-American thought. He will offer his perspective about civil discourse.
Members of the audience will have an opportunity to enter the discussion as well, after initial comments and conversation by the panelists. SDIS President Sam Gusman will moderate.
