Walk San Diego, The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, Move San Diego and the Urban Land Institute San Diego/Tijuana District Council announces a mayoral debate on Sept. 19, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the University of San Diego’s Shiley Theatre.

Walk. Bike. Move. Live. A San Diego Mayoral Debate will give voters the chance to engage mayoral candidates on improved transportation, sustainable economic development and growth and quality of life for all San Diegans.

The city’s population is estimated to increase over 645,000 people in the next 40 years. A large portion of that population increase will be focused in the urban centers, creating increased demand for transportation without having to get into cars, jobs without having to leave the neighborhood and housing that is focused in urban centers.

Walk. Bike. Move. Live. will address what the mayoral candidates have planned for the following:
• Improving and increasing transportation choices
• Livable, walkable and bikeable communities
• Sustainable, smart urban growth and development
• Providing employment opportunities close to home and vice-versa

“We want to progress the political conversation and talk about issues that affect everyone’s day-to-day life,” said Elyse Lowe, executive director of Move San Diego. “As we see our population grow by almost 50% in the next few decades, we want to know what the candidates are planning to do to create livable communities and more choices to move around the city.”

Two transportation options gaining increased traction in San Diego are bicycling and walking. SANDAG projects that by 2050 bicycle lanes, paths and other routes will more than double and walking will increase 30 percent. According to San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and Walk San Diego, their members want to hear how the next mayor will handle safety and access as more people use bikes and sidewalks.

Along with discussion on how residents move around the city, the groups will focus on urban growth and development. With growth in the county focused in urban areas and away from rural areas, Mary Lydon, executive director of the Urban Land Institute San Diego/Tijuana District Council says it’s important for voters to assess how the mayoral candidates will address sustainable urban development.

“We are seeing an increase in demand for more sustainable living options, which are near work and collaborative spaces. People want those all within walking distance to the coffee shop and grocery store,” Lydon said. “San Diego’s urban areas need to grow smart to provide the types of communities that are in demand.”

The mayoral candidates are expected to bring their ideas on how they’ll lead San Diego’s growth and land-use as development increases out of the down economy.

This will be one of a small number pre-election debates, and the only one that will have a primary focus on enhancing and improving quality of life through transportation and livable communities in America’s Finest City.
