Some would consider pen to be one of the more challenging mediums to work with, because of ink’s unforgiving nature and inability to be erased. However, this fact has not deterred artists from being attracted to the effect of the ink and line work creates a beautiful array of tones and images.
Excellent examples of line work can be seen at the Thumbprint Gallery’s "The Pen is Mightier: An Exhibition of Pen Art," which will be held at BASIC on Tuesday, February 5 at 7pm
MICHELLE D. FERRERA
The artist headlining this show is Michelle D. Ferrera. Ferrera is a successful local artist who has be exhibited throughout San Diego, Los Angeles, and New York. Ferrera most often produces realistic portraits viewed through unique perspectives. Ferrera’s figures are most often female and beautifully curved. It would be difficult to guess the women’s gradated smooth skin was created through line work.
Ferrera’s attention to detail is immaculate and she creates an image passable for reality. The foundation for most of Ferrera’s drawings is unstained grained wood panel. The soft wood contrasts with the stark ink work and creates tension in her works, while also creating a beautiful cohesion between her pieces.
Another artist, Steve Cachero, is a professional cinematographer. Cachero is the Assistant DP at FortyOneTwenty Inc. Cachero’s creative background was developed through numerous influences and experiences. Cachero is an exceptional illustrater, graphic designer, and painter. Cachero’s work has a distinctive urban flare, with a profound beauty.
CARRIE ANNE HUDSON
Carrie Anne Hudson is another artist who will appear in the upcoming show. Hudson’s inspiration comes from her dreams, nightmares, and daily encounters. When describing her work and process, Hudson says shes always been a “sucker for ink pens.” This local San Diegan produces work that is dark, yet colored at the same time, creating the impression of a dreary faireytale.
The event starts at 7pm and runs until 12am on Tuesday February 5. There is no dress code and no cover. However, you must be at least 21 years old to attend.
