The Ephrussis were a grand banking family who "burned like a come" in 19th-century Paris and Vieanna society. Yet by the end of World War II, almost the only thing remainder of their vast empire was a collection of 264 wood and ivory carvings, none of them larger than a matchbox.

"The Hare With Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance" by Edmund de Waal is discussed in conjunction with Art of East Asia and "Masterworks in Metal, Ink, and Silk."
