Join the San Diego Air & Space Museum for a special presentation on Monday from Willard Wigan, creator of the world’s smallest sculptures. Wigan’s Buzz Aldrin sculpture is currently on display in the Museum’s "Ripley’s Believe It or Not!" exhibit.

Described as the “eighth wonder of the world,” Willard Wigan has created works of art virtually invisible to the naked eye, yet when viewed through high power magnification, the effect on the viewer is truly mesmerizing. His sculptures commonly sit within the eye of a needle or on the head of a pin. One work can be as small as 0.005 mm and some of his most recent works do not exceed the size of a human blood cell. Willard takes months to complete a single sculpture, and has to slow his heartbeat and breathing to a near trance-like state to carve his miniature masterpieces.

Born in 1957 in Birmingham, England, Wigan began his life as an artist at a very young age. Suffering from dyslexia and learning difficulties as a child, he struggled at school, finding solace in creating art of such minute proportions that it virtually could not be seen with the naked eye. Wigan, who is completely self -taught, has baffled medical science and has been the subject of many discussions among micro-surgeons, nano-technologists and at universities worldwide. His work is both inspirational and ground breaking in both artistic and scientific circles.

Date: Monday, February 25th at 11:30am

Admission Information:
Admission to Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is only $5 (with general admission) and includes entrance to the general Museum galleries. The Museum’s Flight Path Grill will be open for lunch

Wigan’s Buzz Aldrin sculpture is currently on display in the Museum’s Ripley’s Believe It or Not! exhibition. This is the first time a Ripley’s exhibition has been to San Diego since the California Pacific International Exposition in 1935, the same year the Museum’s Ford Building was built. The Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, in collaboration with the San Diego Air & Space Museum, created this special exhibition specifically for San Diego. This exhibition is the only one of its kind in the world.
