The San Diego region will celebrate the legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a waterfront parade on Sunday, January 20, 2012. The 32nd annual parade begins at 2 p.m. at the downtown San Diego Bay waterfront.
Parade viewing along the route is free.
The parade is coordinated by the Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, the oldest Black fraternity in the United States, which was founded in 1906 at Cornell University. Dr. King was a member of this fraternity.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C., which opened to the public in August 2011, conveys three themes that were central throughout Dr. King's life – democracy, justice and hope.
