The Nikkei Student Union Aztecs and the San Diego Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League will be commemorating the annual Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution.
Speakers will include Greg Marutani, National JACL Education Chairman, Casey Tanaka, Mayor of the City of Coronado, David Loy, legal director ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties, and David Kawamoto, immediate past National President JACL.
Fred Korematsu challenged Executive Order 9066 which forcibly placed Japanese Americans into internment camps during World War II. Freedom of Information Act findings by Professor Peter Irons of UCSD led to re-opening his Supreme Court case. In 1988 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton.
