Environmental Portraiture Workshop With Sam Hodgson

On Saturday, July 13th, 2013 from 2pm-6pm, join local photojournalist Sam Hodgson for an engaging, hands-on workshop inspired by our current photojournalism exhibition, Pictures of the Year International.
In this 4 hour course, we will discuss the elements of a storytelling portrait, how to approach subjects, how to deal with natural light under difficult conditions and how to make a subject comfortable in front of the camera through both gallery and classroom instruction.
Participants will have the opportunity to practice their skills by finding interesting photo subjects in Balboa Park and creating an image that reveals something about an individual and her/his relationship to the park. The session will conclude with a group critique of the images created in the workshop.
*Space is limited to 15 participants. Please bring a digital camera and USB thumb drive.
Sam Hodgson is a freelance photojournalist specializing in editorial and commercial photography. He is a regular contributor to international newspapers and wire services including Bloomberg, Reuters, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
