Margaret Zoehrer will present an illustrated story of the Ramayama, one of the great Sanskrit epics of ancient India. The Ramayana’s reputed author is Valmiki, an Indian poet of the 3rd Century BC. It consists of seven books containing 24,000 couplets. The chief character is Rama, a prince and seventh incarnation of Vishnu.
By bending the bow of a certain king he wins Sita, the daughter of the king, in marriage. But Rama is deprived of his throne and he and Sita are sent into exile where Sita is carried off by the demon Ravana. With the aid of the king of the monkeys and an army of monkeys and bears, Rama slays Ravana and rescues Sita and Rama is restored to his throne.
