Posttraumatic Stress and Growth in Older Adult lecture Presented by Steven Thorp, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, UC San Diego will be held on June 19, 2013, 5:30 p.m.
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was first brought to public attention by war veterans, but the condition may stem from various traumatic incidents, such as rape, serious illness, child abuse, a car accident, or a natural disaster like a flood. The majority of people exposed to such events experience symptoms of distress; some develop minor or full-blown PTSD.
However, there have been very few studies of how older adults with PTSD symptoms may improve with treatment. And after a traumatic event, some individuals experience growth, such as a greater appreciation for life or a greater spiritual connection.
Learn more about posttraumatic growth from Steven Thorp, PhD, program director of the Posttraumatic Stress Disorders Clinical Team at the VA San Diego Healthcare System and cochief of the Psychotherapy Unit in the Center of Excellence for Stress and Mental Health. A national consultant and trainer for the VA San Diego Healthcare System, Dr. Thorp is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in assessments and empirically supported psychotherapies for PTSD. He is particularly interested in treating older adults with PTSD and in adapting new technologies to enhance psychotherapy outcomes.
