THIS EVENT IS IN THE PAST!
On March 9th and 10th, Sky Mountain Institute and San Diego Permaculture will be hosting the Southern Permaculture Convergence at Sky Mountain Institute’s seven acre demonstration site in Harmony Grove, Escondido. The event will draw together an exceptional collective of permaculture designers, teachers, and professionals representing some of the core people practicing and teaching permaculture in Southern California and beyond. This year’s keynote speaker is Paul Wheaton of permies.com, the largest permaculture site on the internet, with millions of viewers and participants. Also known as the Duke of Permaculture, Paul is a colorful and dynamic Permaculture icon whose presence guarantees that the convergence will be a lively and informative event. Other local speakers include Greg Ruben of California’s Own Native Plant Design and Rick Halsey, Director of the Chaparral Institute.
This is a great opportunity to bring the whole family and learn more about living sustainably, with lectures and hands-on demonstrations including rainwater harvesting, aquaponics, planting with natives, herbal remedies, bee-keeping, backyard chickens and many other topics. There are even workshops specifically designed for children.
Convergence tickets are $75 until March 6th. Children’s tickets $10.
Prior to the convergence Sky Mountain Institute will be hosting Paul Wheaton’s Earthworks Workshop on March 6th-8th during which he will break out the diesel equipment and tear into a barren San Diego hillside to begin its transformation into a permaculture food forest paradise. Over 1.3 million people visit Paul Wheaton’s website, permies.com, per month. Don’t miss your chance to see him and his overalls live in the flesh! Workshop tickets are $400.
The convergence is about connecting and educating people. People who can go out and make a change in the world. We are now in a period of growing ecological and social transformation, and we have the opportunity through permaculture to come together and work collaboratively towards implementing regenerative solutions to the many serious problems facing the world today. We can make changes to heal our relationship with nature and provide abundance for ourselves, our communities, and the Earth. Many of the solutions we are seeking to the world’s problems can be found in permaculture – a growing global movement for ecological and social regeneration.
The word ‘permaculture’ was originally coined by University professor Bill Mollison and environmental design student David Holmgren in the 1970’s and was first taught as “Applied Systems Design “ in 1981. The word “permaculture” itself came from the notion of establishing “permanent agriculture” or “permanent culture”; in other words, permaculture is a practical set of ecological design principles and methods for human settlement that provide for humanity’s needs of food, energy, shelter, water and other material and non--material needs in a way that is sustainable and regenerative with the Earth’s natural ecosystems. Over the last 30 years, permaculture has grown to become a global grassroots movement of healing and re-connection with the Earth penetrating many different fields, continents, and cultures. Though often thought of as just a set of gardening techniques, permaculture is in fact a whole systems design philosophy. As a methodology for whole systems thinking, permaculture is being applied towards business, economics, government, group process, and even spirituality. It is in this spirit of permaculture as a holistic design philosophy encompassing many fields that we are truly excited to gather in one place such a diverse spectrum of teachers and facilitators.

About San Diego Permaculture:
The San Diego Permaculture Meetup was started in early 2011 by a handful of people committed to the principles of permaculture. Our group is project and education oriented. We love to get our hands dirty in healthy, organic soil. We care about our planet and people. We lovingly tend to the land and try to minimize our impact on it in everything that we do. The San Diego Permaculture Meetup hosts two Convergence events and four core meetups per year, and lists permaculture events in San Diego County.www.meetup.com/sandiegopermaculture
