The tasks of the Renaissance and Baroque portrait painter was not simply to capture the sitter's likeness but to also portray their social standing and status. From head to toe details of dress were documented by artists and coveyed a wealth of information.
By starting with footwear, Elizabeth Semmelhack, Senior Curator, The Beta Shoe Museum, Toronto, Canada, will explore how issues as varied as New World exploration to Enlightenment thinking influenced the construction of gender and the proclamation of wealth through dress, and will reveal how concepts established during this 100-year period continue to inform perceptions of dress today.
Sponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council.
