Award-winning science fiction author Vernor Vinge will discuss "Groupminds: Humanity Plus the Internet” on Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. in Room 108 of the SDSU Library.
The discussion is free and open to everyone, and refreshments will be available. A book signing will follow the lecture.
Vinge’s writings have often been visionary; in many cases, what yesterday was fantasy has now become reality. His novella "True Names" (1981) is one of the earliest stories about cyberspace. "Rainbows End" (2006) explores the implications of wearable computing (think Google Glass) and smart environments. Vinge has won five Hugo Awards, including three for Best Novel. His latest novel is "The Children of the Sky" (2011). Vinge also taught math and computer science at SDSU from 1972 to 2000.
