First Friday Films: 'Blow Up'
Above: Promotional graphic for the film "Blow Up," by Michelangelo Antonioni, starring David Hemmings, Vanessa Redgrave and Sarah Miles (1966).
In this film, Thomas, played by David Hemmings, is a talented and successful portrait photographer living in swinging 1960s London. Bored with studio sessions with fashion models, he travels out into the streets to photograph London and unwittingly records a possible crime. The unfolding drama tests Thomas’ skills and knowledge as a photographer, pushing him to obsession.
Michelangelo Antonioni's psychedelic palette and suspenseful writing are complemented by an incredible soundtrack from Herbie Hancock and The Yardbirds. Shown in conjunction with "Arnold Newman: Masterclass."
