Friday Morning Lecture & Tour Series: The Lure Of The Orient

The term “orientalism” continues to be both a problematic and volatile expression. Looking at the rich and captivating culture of 19th century Romantic European painters, Roxana Velásquez, the Museum's Maruja Baldwin Executive Director, will explore "orientalism" and its relation to perceptions of gender, identity, and space. Velásquez will discuss specific works, Biblical stories, and historic passages to further understand how these artists represented the art, people, and customs of the Middle East during this period.
Artists considered include: Antoine-Jean Gros, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Eugene Delacroix, Richard Dadd, Odilon Redon, Alfred Guinet, Gustave Moreau, and John Frederick Lewis.
This is the first lecture of the 2014 Friday Morning Lecture & Tour Series. Happening the third Friday of each month, each lecture focuses on works on view and is followed by a docent-led tour.
