San Diego Opera presents Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata."

The Roaring Twenties brought us novel inventions, a racy new culture and dramatic social change . . and for Violetta Valery, illness, judgment and sacrifice.

This party girl lives life on her own terms, gives into pleasure for money and keeps her heart safe, until she meets a man who changes her life.

Choosing love over freedom, Violetta cannot resist these feelings and the couple begin their life together, until an unwelcome visitor threatens their future. Will Violetta bend to the will of another or surrender to her heart? And can she do it in time?

Starring Corrine Winters as Violetta, Joshua Guerrero as Alfredo, and Stephen Powell as Germont.

(Super) Short Review: Thanks to its 1920s setting, an already beautiful opera feels even more grand. It's like a Gatsby party, complete with dancers. The costumes shine, the scenery is opulent and the powerful voices bring the story of ill-fated love to life. But sometimes, the Roaring Twenties backdrop feels mismatched to a story that's so overwhelmingly sad. - Nina Garin
