'Music At The Movies' With Bruno Leone

Following his sold-out “Giants of Broadway” performance in 2016, Mr. Leone returns to the Athenaeum to present his heralded two-part series, “Music of the Movies,” an exciting and explorative adventure into the world of music and cinema.

Pianist Bruno Leone’s approach to entertainment is uniquely appealing and wide ranging. In his inimitable style, Mr. Leone plays, sings and chats his way through and around the lives, music and lyrics of America’s greatest popular composers and lyricists.

March 14, 2017 Lecture 1 : Movies and Music

Mr. Leone will describe the adaption of music to feature films as he traces the impact of cinema upon popular culture. Featured will be the songs of such legends as lyricist Gus Kahn, Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein and several others. Mr. Leone will also perform the music of Romantic composers, such as Chopin, Grieg, Borodin and others, presenting the captivating stories of how and why their beloved music found its way onto the “Silver Screen.”

March 21, 2017 Lecture 2: Broadway Goes to Hollywood

In the 1930s, many notable Broadway composers began scoring for the movie industry. This performance will feature the stories about and movie music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and many others whose roles in the art of musical cinema are immeasurable. To conclude the series, Mr. Leone will describe the evolution and singular musical contributions of one of the most acclaimed giants of the movie industry, Henry Mancini.
