Tibetan monks to host Buddhist-themed events and construct a sacred sand mandala.

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Dieguito is honored to host the monks of Gaden Shartse Norling Monastery, South India, during the week of May 16-20 for a sacred sand mandala creation.

This ancient two-dimensional Tibetan Buddhist mandala is the most artistic, labor-intensive and concentration-intensive of all mandalas created. It will require between 75 and 125 hours of effort, completed by several monks at a time.

The public is welcomed daily to view the sand mandala, visit with the monks and shop in their Tibetan Buddhist Market. The peaceful sounds of the mandala tools, softly rubbing harmoniously against each other, can help one feel more relaxed, centered and connected to the universe. The monks look forward to sharing their culture, as well as practices and paths to inner peace and compassion. There is no charge to view the mandala but donations are kindly appreciated.

The Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour also includes special meditation sessions, ceremonies and interfaith dialogues, and Saturday’s Tibetan Family Day offers storytelling, calligraphy, butter sculpting and mini-mandala making activities for all ages.

For more information and a full schedule of events, please visit the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Dieguito website.

Gaden Shartse Monastic College was originally founded in Tibet in the 15th century. After the invasion of Tibet by the Chinese in 1949, 48 surviving members of the College fled south across the border into India to escape the destruction in Tibet. In 1969, Gaden Shartse Norling Monastic University was founded as an effort to re-establish one of the great monastic traditions of Tibet. Today, Gaden Shartse has established a reputation as being the leader in the field of Buddhist and Tibetan studies.

The Sacred Arts of Tibet Tours enable the monastery to preserve the cultural legacy of Tibet and its people. The kind donations raised on tour will help to maintain the everyday needs of the monks.

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Dieguito, located in Solana Beach, CA, is a vibrant, intentionally diverse Unitarian Universalist congregation that models and promotes both locally and globally: love, spiritual growth, service, right relations and sustainable living.
