There is a performative aspect to Silfredo La O's work. Trained in Cuba as a dancer, his paintings are imbued with movement. Representational elements emerge amid a sea of color and calligraphic brushstrokes. In recent works Silfredo finds inspiration in poetry incorporating words into his compositions.
Larry Caveney, works in video and painting. His quick expressive portraits of male heads or figures seem to be exploding, transforming or disintegrating. Larry’s work explores the idea of the “artist as fool.” He pokes fun at the “white male” figure: superheroes, politicians, sometimes clothed, sometimes naked, many of them seen dancing or gesturing.
In this series, Chris Warr carves large head sculptures out of foam and paint; the grotesque and the ironic fuse into these characters. Sometimes veering towards the representational, sometimes deconstructed, he places them on pedestals built out of found objects.
Exhibit runs through February 28, 2013. Presentation by the artists at the opening reception on February 7th at 7:00 pm in G101. For more info go to www.sdmesa.edu/art-gallery.
