Through the disassembling and reassembling of nature, San Diego-based artist, Stephen Curry presents a fresh perspective of the landscape. Fragmenting trees and other objects from nature, his dramatic installations recall photographic negatives that hint at a familiar environment.
Scape / Escape will feature a collection of multiple panel paintings that function together evoking consideration of our surrounding landscape.
Exhibition Dates: November 9, 2013 – January 26, 2014
Join us for a mega-reception on November 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. that celebrates the opening of four concurrent exhibitions that also focus on the subject of the landscape: "Scape/Escape: Stephen Curry," "Nature Improved: San Diego Artists Interpret Our Landscape," "Urban Entropy: James Enos," "Contemporary Landscape Photography: An International Perspective".
The reception is free for members and $10 for nonmembers and includes an open bar and creative appetizers provided by OMA’s Culinary Arts Committee.
Curry cites artists such as Caravaggio and Zurburan as important influences on his work for their use of strong contrasts of light and dark to create illusion and drama. He also finds inspiration in the still-lifes of Wayne Thiebaud and feels his work, like Thiebaud’s, presents compelling compositions that successfully blend realism with abstraction.
Stephen Curry grew up in San Diego and moved to Northern California to study at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1987-1990. He currently lives and works in San Diego.
