For more than 60 years, equestrian sports aficionados mark their April and May calendars for the Del Mar National Horse Show, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in the beautiful oceanside town of Del Mar, California.
The Del Mar National began in 1946 as part of the annual San Diego County Fair, which happens each June at the Fairgrounds. By the late 1970s, the Del Mar National had grown so large, it outgrew the confines of the county fair and became a separate event. Western and Hunter/Jumper competition comprised the then two-week show until the early 1990s, when Dressage competition was added as a third week in the show.
Each year the show attracts more than 1,500 horses representing many breeds across three distinct disciplines. Spectators will see reining, spins, sliding stops, elegant dressage moves choreographed to music, daredevil show jumping, trick riders, comedy acts, thrills and spills, among many other exciting events. The competition for prize money, trophies, and ribbons is fierce! Don’t miss out—come and join us!
The three weeks feature:
Western Week - April 17 through April 20
Four AQHA and PCQHA shows, and a NRHA show are the hallmarks of Western Week and include Open, Amateur, and Youth classes in Trail, Western, Reining, English, Showmanship, Barrel Racing, and more! The Del Mar National is one of the few remaining shows offering a wealth of perpetual trophies which still travel with the winners, as well as lovely individual class trophies and keepsake ribbons. The highlight of Western Week is Night of the Horse, presented by Mary's Tack & Feed on Saturday, April 19, at 7:00P.M.
Dressage Week - April 24 through April 27
the CDI 3* & CDI 1* U25 Y/J Del Mar includes the USEF official 2014 qualifying competition; USEF National Grand Prix & Intermediaire Championships; Adequan FEI North American Junior & Young Riders Championships presented by Gotham North; USEF Pony Rider Dressage National Championships; AGCO/USEF National Junior & Young Rider Championships; USEF Young Adult Brentina Cup Championships and the Markel/USEF Young & Developing Horse Dressage.
Hunter/Jumper Week - April 29 through May 4
It features the $100,000 Grand Prix of Del Mar, an evening filled with exciting speed, agility and nail-biting competition! World class horses and riders will again set the bar very high literally and figuratively as they vie for this prestigious title and hefty paycheck! New this year, the $10,000 Speed Derby of Del Mar will provide plenty of action, thrills, and excitement.
