Here Not There: San Diego Art Now will offer a stimulating and provocative view into the variety, strength, and vitality of work being produced by contemporary artists living in San Diego County.
The exhibition will focus on emerging artists -- serving as the first museum exhibition for many -- as well as under-recognized mid-career artists, and will include artworks in a wide range of genres, from painting, drawing, and sculpture to installation, video, new media, conceptual and performance art.
The participating artists were selected based on artist submissions as well as a sustained period of research and studio and gallery visits. The curators also looked into the social networks through which individual artists are coalescing with greater frequency -- not just universities or colleges, but commercial and alternative gallery spaces, collectives, and artists’ groups.
This approach parallels MCASD’s highly regarded 1985 group show, A San Diego Exhibition: Forty-Two Emerging Artists, which marked an important moment in the local art scene. For Here Not There, the final selection of artists emphasizes multiplicity and diversity over the uniformity of a single curatorial viewpoint or style.
The exhibition is organized and curated by MCASD Associate Curator Lucía Sanromán.
The show begins Sunday, June 6 and will be open to the public through September 9.
