Mission Federal Credit Union and United Way of San Diego County are launching the third annual Read to Succeed Book Drive to get books into the hands of children just in time for back-to-school and help get local children excited about reading. Starting on Monday, July 21 through Monday, August 11, San Diegans can donate new or used books, including bilingual books, for children up to age 8, at any of Mission Fed’s branches. The books will be distributed to economically disadvantaged children throughout San Diego County.
In San Diego County, half of third graders are not reading up to their level. Most end up significantly behind their peers in reading proficiency – a critical skill for learning everything else, whether in school or in life. Mission Fed and United Way want to help end this cycle by encouraging children to become enthusiastic and regular readers.
“When children own their own books, they are more likely to love reading and good readers are more likely to graduate from high school,” said United Way of San Diego County President and CEO Kevin Crawford.
“Mission Federal Credit Union has a strong commitment to give back to the San Diego community,” said Angie Lasagna, Vice President of Community Relations and External Affairs. “With only half of 3rd graders being able to read at their appropriate level, the Read to Succeed program is another way to help make a difference in these young lives.”
