Description

Have fun while learning! This summer, the Heritage of the Americas Museum offers children grades 5th through 9th the opportunity to learn survival skills, art appreciation and geology.

Survivor: Pioneer Skills in the Computer World!
Learn how to create a model shelter, make fire by friction, rig and lift a weight using a rope and pulleys. You’ll follow an orienteering course using a compass and learn to use a lever and fulcrum, saw with a 2-person cross-cut saw and use a wooden yoke to carry a burden. You’ll hear campfire stories and learn about the Oregon Trail. The course will end with a hobo cookout.

Art Stars:
Introduction lessons will cover various art techniques using materials including drawing tools and painting with watercolor and acrylics. Artifacts and art pieces of the Heritage of the Americas Museum readily provide inspiring samples of cultural art, designs, patterns, and more.

You, The Artist:
What’s your style – abstract, detailed and realistic, or just make an impression? Imagination is your key as you enter the fun world of artistic creativity. Drawing techniques will be the focus as you learn and practice skills using composition, shading, perspective, and more. Materials will include pencil, charcoal, ink pen, watercolor pencil, and pastels.

The Earth is A Mystery, Dig it!
Embark on an exciting adventure into the worlds of geology, paleontology, archaeology and anthropology as you work to solve the mysteries of the earth. The Heritage of the Americas Museum will be your classroom where you’ll conduct hands-on projects that include prospecting for minerals, unearthing artifacts, analyzing fossils, and discovering the secrets of mysterious civilizations.
