“Common Tread: Traversing the American Landscape” celebrates the investigative spirit rooted in American culture and the joyous vitality of traveling by car. It features the work of fifteen contemporary artists who employ themes of location and memory to produce an experiential evaluation of American road travel through photography, blown glass, acrylic, pigment on rag paper, oil, sculpture, car parts, and watercolor.
Nearly a full century since the advent of the automobile as a means of transportation available to the general population, cars continue to serve as a declaration of independence. After WWI, Americans began to heed the call of city boulevards, state parkways and Route 66. New words and terms - “motel,” “roadside attraction,” “drive-in” - became the familiar vocabulary of a restless, curious, energetic nation. The "Great American Road Trip” with its excitement and optimism created a new rite of passage for a culture already born on the move.
Through photography, blown glass, acrylic, pigment on rag paper, oil, sculpture, car parts, and watercolor, “Common Tread: Traversing the American Landscape” responds to an ever-increasing homogenization of America with images of the familiar and the surprising that evoke displacement, discovery, escape and arrival.
Artists featured include: Jo Babcock, Jason Chakravarty, Melissa Chandon, John Divola, James Gucwa, S.A. Hawkins, Olga Koumoundouros, Jason Kowalski, James Lorigan, Robert Olsen, Rob Reynolds, Dustin Shuler, Kevin Stewart-Magee, Robert Townsend and Andy Warhol.
