The illimitable range of possibilities offered by the fiber medium is explored in Oceanside Museum of Art presentation of the 17th biennial juried exhibition of "Quilt National." Challenging viewers with bold designs and technological advances, the 30 selected quilts honor the quilting tradition while embracing new forms of expression through innovative techniques.
The exhibition opens with a preview reception on Saturday, October 13th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The reception is complimentary for OMA members and $10 for nonmembers and includes creative appetizers by OMA’s Culinary Arts Committee and an open beer and wine bar.
Learn how to quilt during a one-day Hand-Stitched Connections Art Quilt Workshop with Jane LaFazio on Saturday, November 17 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Cost for the workshop, including all materials, is $40 for OMA members and $50 for nonmembers. Call (760) 435-3721 to register for the class.
"Quilt National" demonstrates the transformations taking place in the world of quilting, promoting the medium as an art form. The works on view display a reverence for the lessons taught by heritage quilt makers, incorporating standard methods of piecing, patching and embroidery.
At the same time, however, the "Quilt National" artist challenges the boundaries of traditional quilting styles by utilizing new technical elements such as digitally manipulated photographs, ink jet printed fabrics and program stitched images.
The quilts in the 2011 collection reflect the artists' interest in using their medium to give voice to a concern for either the world at large, as in the environmental and/or political issues addressed by the works, or to express feelings relevant to the particular quilt maker's inner world. Themes in the quilts range from nature and environmentalism to duality, perception and communication.
"Quilt National" is on display from October 14, 2012 through February 10, 2013.
"Quilt National" is organized by the Dairy Barn Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts Center. Established in 1978 as a non-profit corporation, the Dairy Barn is dedicated to producing programs that feature both traditional and contemporary art with a strong focus on the arts, crafts and cultural heritage of southeastern Ohio. "Quilt National" 2011 is the Dairy Barn’s 17th biennial installment.
